Today is the winter solstice here in the northern hemisphere. It is the shortest day of the year and the turning point of the mid-winter season after which the days gradually begin to lengthen once more.
Traditionally, this is the cause for celebration at this time of year because it represents the return of the light and the triumph of light over darkness.
As a Pagan celebration (also known as Yule) the winter solstice is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world.
Ancient people were hunters and gatherers who spent most of their time outdoors so the seasons played a very important role in their lives.
Understandably, therefore, many cultures had a great reverence for the sun as its light and heat are so crucial for life itself.
However, the festivities were not just about external events.
Symbolically, the light also represents the spirit, and the winter solstice is a time to celebrate the whole cycle of life, death and rebirth.
It is also a time for looking inwards and re-connecting with what is truly important within ourselves and in our lives.
From this enhanced perspective, we can then make new choices and let go of what no longer serves us to make way for new opportunities to flow in at the turn of the year.
This is a moment to pause and reflect, to give ourselves the gift of stillness, silence and space to recharge at every level and to nurture our connection to Source.
We can also make the most of the occasion to fine-tune the alignment of all aspects of ourselves - body, mind, emotions and soul – to make sure that we are living authentically and joyfully.
For all of us, this is an excellent moment to review and celebrate the progress made this year – however great or small that progress may appear to be.
And perhaps even more importantly, it is a chance to take a fresh look at our deepest dreams and passions around life and the place it currently has in our lives.
Happy Winter!
